The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947)
The story itself of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir is very interesting, but my problem with the movie is the casting. Rex Harrison plays the salty old sea captain who’s supposed to be so appealing Gene Tierney would rather spend time with his ghost than with a living man. Gene Tierney plays a middle-aged widow who’s not very attractive to the opposite sex. Does anyone see a problem here? Why not choose Joan Fontaine, Rosalind Russell, Celia Johnson, or Irene Dunne as the reclusive matron? And as for the ghost – if you’ve read my reviews, you know I’ve said this several times: It should have been David Niven! Hands down, The Niv would have been perfect.
If you disagree, you’ll probably love this movie. Gene moves into an old house by the sea with her young daughter, Natalie Wood. She wants to keep to herself, but when the portrait of a dead sea captain comes to life, she develops a friendship with him. Eventually, his beautiful blue eyes, his sparkling smile, his fantastic speaking voice, his pain, wisdom, and charm turn their friendship into something more. Oh wait, that’s what would have happened if David Niven had been cast. As it stands with Rex Harrison, he acts like he doesn’t like talking to her at all. She’d be better off picking George Sanders, the bad guy!
