The Hobbit: An Unexpected Adventure (2012)
As I’ve always said, origin stories are the best because they get to introduce you to a new world. However, when an origin story has already been made, as have two subsequent movies, it’s a bit anticlimactic to learn the real origin story has also been pre-emptively split into three parts. The book The Hobbit is quite small, and is required reading in elementary school. How can it possibly be stretched out for nine hours (because why would a Peter Jackson trilogy be made of 90-minute movies)? For the most part, I enjoyed the first Hobbit movie, but I never made it out to see the other two. It’s been almost ten years, and I still have no desire to rent them.
I think we all wondered why Peter Jackson didn’t start off with The Hobbit, since that was the story (and beloved 1977 cartoon) everyone knew. By the time he got around to it, we were all very excited to see who he’d cast as young Ian Holm, also known as Bilbo Baggins. As an ageless wizard, Ian McKellen could keep his part, as could ethereal Cate Blanchett and Hugo Weaving. And what’s a Hobbit movie without Gollum and Andy Serkis?
Martin Freeman steals the hearts of audiences worldwide as Bilbo, as he has his little mishaps around the shire, meets the dwarves invited to dinner, and runs after them declaring, “I’m going on an adventure!” With tons of special effects, the usual beautiful New Zealand landscapes, and all the enchanted creatures from the first third of the book (remember, this is split unnecessarily into nine hours, when cartoon covered everything in less than ninety minutes), you’ll certainly be entertained. If you love this magical world, you can finish out the trilogy and get another DVD boxed set to watch over and over again!
