The Incident (1967)
Although The Incident can technically be classified as a disaster movie, it’s not nearly as enjoyable as the rest in that genre. There are a host of supporting characters, each having their own stories to make you hope they make it out alive, and an unstoppable force threatens everyone’s survival. In this case, though, the force is not a natural disaster but two teenage punks. Tony Musante and Martin Sheen (in his screen debut) play cruel bullies who terrorize helpless riders of a subway train. Rebels without a cause, they’re incredibly unlikable. It’s one thing for an old couple to not outrun volcanic lava or withstand the whipping winds of a hurricane; it’s another for their strained hearts to fear a collapse from two hoodlums.
If you do want to see Martin Sheen’s first movie, or if you like seeing very, very bad boys from the 1960s, you can check out this movie. Everyone has their own tastes and their own reasons for sticking through a bad flick. I stuck with The Incident because I wanted to support Thelma Ritter at the end of her career, and I’ll watch anything and everything with Beau Bridges. Other familiar faces include Brock Peters, Ruby Dee, Jack Gilford, Ed McMahon, Jan Sterling, and Gary Merrill.
