The Island of Dr. Moreau (1977)
I’m warning you right now: The Island of Dr. Moreau isn’t for everyone. In fact, it probably isn’t for most people. I spent the vast majority of the film hiding behind a pillow and just listening to what was being said. I’m a lightweight when it comes to scary movies, so my fellow lightweights should either skip it entirely or have a large pillow handy.
Michael York washes up ashore an island headed by the intelligent and philosophical Burt Lancaster. Burt is very hospitable, until Michael starts getting curious about the other inhabitants of the island and why they look and act so strangely. The makeup used on the actors and stuntmen is really incredible, but alas, the Academy hadn’t created an award for that category yet. Director Don Taylor did a remarkable job wrangling all the animals and stuntmen together to during the action scenes. I still can’t believe the director is the same actor who played Buckley in Father of the Bride!
Normally, Michael York isn’t thought of as a heavyweight actor, but there’s a large section of this movie (which I can’t describe because of spoiler alerts) in which he really pulls out all the stops. I didn’t think he had it in him to be so raw and open on camera. If you’re tempted to see him in a great performance, or to see the makeup or direction, just make sure you’re up for an extremely creepy and disturbing plot. If you’re an animal lover like I am, I wouldn’t recommend it. Pick something that only involves human beings instead.
DLM Warning: If you suffer from vertigo or dizzy spells, like my mom does, this movie might not be your friend. When Michael York first lands on the island, there are lots of camera bobbing from the ocean angles, and POV shots when he wanders around the trees, and that will make you sick. In other words, "Don't Look, Mom!"
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to gruesome and frightening images, as well as upsetting subject matter involving animals, I wouldn't let my kids watch it.
