The Lavender Hill Mob (1951)
I have absolutely no idea why Alec Guinness was nominated for an Academy Award for The Lavender Hill Mob, when he was ignored for Oliver Twist, Kind Hearts and Coronets, The Prisoner, and A Majority of One. This movie is ridiculous! I sat through it thinking there must have been some scene worthy of the hype, but I never found it.
Alec is a lowly worker in a bank who plots a robbery during a routine truck transport. His cohorts are Stanley Holloway, Sidney James, and Alfie Bass, petty criminals who are as inept as they are dedicated. There are tons of missteps and accidents, dry and slapstick humor, but I just couldn’t get absorbed. I don’t have a problem with a serious dramatic actor showing off his comedic talents, but this movie didn’t convince me that Alec Guinness did anything besides had a fun weekend clowning around with his pals in front of a video camera. If you’re renting this because it features a pre-famous Audrey Hepburn, you can find her fifteen seconds within the first five minutes of the movie. After that, feel free to turn it off.
DLM Warning: If you suffer from vertigo or dizzy spells, like my mom does, this movie might not be your friend. When they’re on the Eiffel Tower towards the end, there are several camera spins and that will make you sick. In other words, “Don’t Look, Mom!”
