The Little Princess (1939)
The Shirley Temple version of The Little Princess is a lot different than the 1995 remake. I’m partial to the modern one, since it includes the cuter, sweeter elements of the story. In 1939, Shirley Temple doesn’t tell stories to the other girls in the boarding school. She’s actually quite bratty, which isn’t at all her character in the original book. In the book, she’s supposed to be kind and endearing, showing that no matter what clothes she wears on the outside, she’s a little princess on the inside. In this movie, she’s a spoiled rich girl in need of a humbling.
The basic premise is still the same, though. Shirley’s father Ian Hunter is called away to the service and he sets her up in a classy boarding school. She’s catered to by the headmistress and her brother, Mary Nash and Arthur Treacher, but when the money stops coming in, the special treatment stops. You’ll see Cesar Romero, Richard Greene, E.E. Clive, Miles Mander, and Anita Louise in the supporting cast, but you’re going to have to make a choice. If you love Shirley Temple, watch this version. If you love Frances Hodgson Burnett’s story, watch the remake.
