The Lost World (1925)
Did you know you could see dinosaurs and humans together seventy years before Jurassic Park was made? If you’re up for a silent flick, check out The Lost World, a film adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s fantasy story. In fact, Sir Arthur makes an appearance at the start of the movie to introduce it to the audience!
In the glory of suspension of disbelief before people’s voices could prove them wrong, Wallace Beery was able to come across as an intelligent scientist and explorer. He claims he’s been to see dinosaurs but without any proof, no one believes him. He charters another expedition and brings along with him a big game hunter, Lewis Stone, a professor, Arthur Hoyt, his former explorer partner’s daughter, Bessie Love, and a reporter, Lloyd Hughes. Lew is in love with Bessie, but once she sets eyes on someone younger and less agreeable, Lloyd, she leaves poor Lew in the dust. But Lloyd is only going on the expedition to prove to his fiancé that he’s manly and worthy!
While the romance is a good half of the story, the other half is the exploration. It’s pretty fascinating to see the special effects of 1925 and the imagination that would carry such a story. Can you imagine the thrills of the people in the audience watching it on the big screen? I really enjoyed this one, even though parts of it are pretty dated. But it’s almost 100 years old; of course parts of it are going to be dated. Give it a chance if you don’t mind two hours without talking. If you don’t think you can stand it, stick to Jurassic Park.
