The Magnificent Seven (1960)
Is there any western theme more iconic than Elmer Bernstein’s The Magnificent Seven? Adapted into the Marlboro commercials (which is still iconic even though not very politically correct anymore), his fantastic, boisterous theme rouses you out of your seat and into the Wild West.
Because this is such a famous western flick, it’s almost hard to believe it’s a remake of Seven Samurai, a Japanese drama. I’ve seen the original, and it’s very hard to get past the cultural differences and get immersed in the story. This highly Americanized version is easy to understand and is very straight-forward: seven good guys, one bad guy. Poor Eli Wallach.
Obviously, this is very much a man’s movie. There’s no romance; there aren’t even any women in the movie at all. It’s a bunch of cowboys with big guns and bigger attitudes, all trying to tell the camera, “I’m the coolest one.” But if you read between the lines, you’ll see that The Magnificent Seven is actually quite a fun adventure for the ladies in the audience. The older and wiser ones will appreciate the subtle sexiness of Yul Brynner, while younger ones can choose between James Coburn, the man who appreciates a good challenge, and Steve McQueen, who’s clearly “too cool for school”. Paul Newman fans will see there’s a new bad boy on the block, and it’s quite fun to see Steve trying to steal scenes from Yul. If you like wild, hotshot rebels, there’s Horst Buchholz. Want more sensitivity than machoism? Charles Bronson will be your favorite, as he cares more about protecting the children in the village than anything. In the supporting cast, you’ll see Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter, and Whit Bissell.
As a female viewer, I’m much more consumed by the eye candy than the shoot-em-up action that drives the plot forward. Again, sorry Eli Wallach. But, if the filmmakers didn’t want any women to watch the movie, they shouldn’t have cast such attractive leads. This fun classic is great for date night, since everyone will be happy. If it’s been a while since you’ve seen it, invite your sweetheart over and get ready for a fun night. Bonus points if your boyfriend is a cowboy, too!
