The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)
If it’s possible, don’t find out anything about this movie before you rent it. All you need to know is that it’s a western starring John Wayne, James Stewart, and Vera Miles. It has a great theme song, a fantastically intriguing opening sequence, and a pace for the rest of the film that unfolds beautifully.
In the supporting cast, you’ll see lots of familiar faces: Lee Marvin, Andy Devine, Woody Strode, Edmond O’Brien, John Carradine, John Qualen, and Lee Van Cleef. Edmond O’Brien gives an impressive performance as a newspaperman with a penchant for drinking. A perfect Thomas Mitchell role, had he still been alive, he brings a lot of energy to the part. Lee Marvin is the villain (what a surprise), and while he’s not the greatest actor in the world, you don’t have to be for this movie. You just have to be really mean and act like you don’t have a conscious – which he can do.
It’s a perfect part for James Stewart, as other roles in his career have been leading up to it, like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and Destry Rides Again. He and John Wayne (who is extremely sweet) give Vera Miles a tough choice to make. The first of the swaggering monotone “Howdy, Pilgrim” parts marks the final phase of John’s career. It isn’t as though he’s playing a caricature of himself, but he’s certainly aware that he’s an icon. If you haven’t seen this classic, rent it with other western fans and enjoy!
