The Mating Season (1951)
Thelma Ritter was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in The Mating Season, even though she was the lead. Such was the plight of character actors and actresses. She stars as a cook in a diner, whose son is engaged to a high society dame. While John Lund and Gene Tierney set off in wedded bliss, Thelma has never met her new daughter-in-law. She doesn’t want to embarrass her son by even attending the wedding.
Convinced by her friends that her feelings are ridiculous, she goes to the newlyweds’ house to introduce herself, but accidentally stumbles on Gene in tears. To cheer her up from a very silly squabble, Thelma putters around the house and cooks her something (without making her identity known). Gene hires her to work as their domestic, and since Thelma doesn’t want to embarrass her son by revealing their relationship, she acts the part. She straightens up the place, cooks great meals, and sometimes acts as a go-between when the newlyweds have squabbles.
Parts of the movie are cute, but it could have been a touch more sentimental. It could have made you reach for your handkerchief like Stella Dallas did, with the same theme of a self-sacrificing mother who doesn’t want to embarrass her child. It’s just a regular comedy, so don’t expect the world. Miriam Hopkins costars as Gene’s mother, and keep an eye out for Jan Sterling and Ellen Corby. At the Rag awards, we swapped out Thelma Ritter’s nomination for the more heartwarming (but still very funny) The Model and the Marriage Broker. Watch both for a great Thelma double feature!
