The Miracle Worker (1962)
Following the success of the Playhouse 90 tv movie, a Broadway show chronicled the meeting and early relationship of the young Helen Keller to her teacher Anne Sullivan. Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke rose to fame and were recruited to reprise their roles in the movie. Consequently, no one remembers Teresa Wright and Patty McCormack.
When you watch this classic, it’s very clear it’s been adapted from a play, so keep that in mind. Similar to The Bad Seed, the Broadway cast (helmed by the Broadway director) performs a show they’ve mastered for the camera. Sometimes it feels like Patty Duke wants to hit the back row, but that’s because she did it that way over 700 times. And she was only fifteen years old, so you can cut her over-the-top-ness a break.
Both ladies took home Oscars for their performances, so if you’re a fan of either, you’ll want to rent this classic. I don’t really like this movie because I found it almost insulting to Helen Keller’s life. Of all the achievements and interesting parts of her life, the one story that gets glorified is a brief glimpse of her as a wayward child first learning sign language? Instead of seeing her run rampant around the dinner table, picking off everyone’s plate, why couldn’t we see her going to college? Instead of watching her learn to spell D-O-L-L, why can’t we experience her writing a book? My criticism is no fault of the two actresses, so if you don’t have a problem with the story, you’ll probably really like the movie.
