The Mistake I Made
by Paula Daly
I loved this book! It’s a thriller without being scary, and it has a daring, naughty plot without being explicit. Where can you find a book like that these days?
Written in a charming British style, the protagonist is a mixture of very interesting qualities. On one hand, she’s extremely intelligent and street savvy, and on the other hand, she makes very bad decisions and exercises poor judgement. She’s a physical therapist with a vast knowledge of spinal, muscle, and joint troubles, but with financial worries burdening her. She’s a single mom with a deadbeat ex-husband, thousands of pounds in debt, and a bailiff taking away all her furniture. When she gets propositioned by her sister’s friend’s husband, to earn $4,000 in one night, she desperately accepts.
One mistake leads to another, but instead of the usual type of story that makes you cringe by the heroine’s stupidity so much that you end up hating her before the book is over, the heroine in The Mistake I Made is very smart. She understands when she’s in danger and she acts with lightening speed to placate a man’s simmering temper, evade policemen’s questions, and say and do what she needs to do in order to get to safety. The book is very educational in that sense, teaching smart reactions to readers who might find themselves in similar situations in the future. It’s also very educational in the medical aspect. I learned so much about back problems and physical therapy by reading a fun novel—how often does that happen? Check this one out if you like one-night-stand-gone-wrong stories. It’s entertaining, riveting, and hopeful from start to finish.
