The Molly Maguires (1970)
I’m don’t usually like movies about Irish rebellions, but The Molly Maguires was extremely entertaining. If you’re looking for a movie to change your mind about that genre, it’s this one. Eye candy, excitement, romance, mystery, and interesting visuals as the characters work in the coalmines; what else can you ask for?
Richard Harris stars as an undercover policeman out to catch the leader of the titular rebellious mob. Frank Finlay (with a great stab at a Welsh accent) is the head detective, disliked by many locals, and he assigns Richard a cover story as a new man in town looking for work in the coalmines. Richard rents a room from the beautiful Samantha Eggar, and he quickly ingratiates himself with Sean Connery, a popular worker underground. When Sean begins to trust Richard, will he get inducted into the secret society? Is it all a ruse, and does Sean suspect Richard’s true loyalty? Will Richard start to sympathize with the violent rebels?
All good questions, and all will be answered when you watch this exciting drama. The story itself would have been enough to earn my recommendation, but my attention was really kept for the eye candy. This movie just might be the cutest Richard Harris has ever looked, with his mustache, fluffy hair, and authentic accent. If he’s one of your celebrity crushes, you’re not going to want to miss this one. It really isn’t Sean Connery’s movie, so if he’s one of your celebrity crushes, you don’t necessarily need to rent it. Sean is angry and violent, and he isn’t given any tender love scenes; he just plants bombs and scowls. But check Richard – I mean the movie – out anyway!
