The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984)
Alright, The Muppets Take Manhattan isn’t the greatest Muppet movie ever, so not everyone will make it through it. It has some pretty silly and un-funny segments, like Dabney Coleman taking a chicken hostage as the police try to arrest him for embezzlement. The songs aren’t fantastic, and it doesn't have any heartwarming moments that make it all worthwhile. The plot is simple: Kermit and his friends have written a musical and they try to get it produced on Broadway. But if you really love the Muppets, you’ll probably want to watch all their movies.
There are a couple of cute parts: an adorable fantasy sequence shows all the Muppets as little babies in a nursery. And Kermit meets a group of ad-men frogs who talk exactly like he does. They all shake their heads in the same way, say “hmm” at the end of their sentences, and have rhyming names, Jill, Gill, and Bill. As usual, there are lots of cameos, including Liza Minnelli, Brooke Shields, Elliot Gould, Linda Lavin, and James Coco. Dabney Coleman, Art Carney, Gregory Hines, and Joan Rivers have slightly bigger roles. But if you want to skip this one, I don’t know if anyone will notice.
