The Out-of-Towners (1992)
If you liked HouseSitter, you’ll want to check out The Out-of-Towners, another pairing of Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn in a remake of the 1970 comedy, originally starring Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis.
Here’s a good idea: watch the preview. You’ll probably laugh three or four times, roll your eyes five or six times, and save yourself ninety minutes. If you really love the preview, you can rent the full movie, but it’s not that fantastic. It’s a screwball comedy made in an era when the screwball comedy wasn’t really popular, so it just comes across as silly. There are tons of slapstick gags and unrealistic mishaps that, if they happened in real life wouldn’t be funny at all. It’s a cute idea, Midwesterners coming to the big city and everything going wrong, but it doesn’t really translate to the big screen very well. If you’ve ever gone on a stressful trip and had everything go wrong, you won’t think it’s funny to laugh at others in the same situation. This is the type of movie that you can use as a babysitter for your kids while you’re making dinner, or that you’ll watch on an airplane when it’s too cold to sleep and you don’t feel like reading your book. It won’t hurt you, but you won’t end up buying a copy.
