The Passionate Plumber (1932)
If you liked Parlor, Bedroom and Bath, make The Passionate Plumber your next feature during movie night, and vice versa. Even though Buster Keaton’s career plummeted with the advent of talking pictures, he did make a couple that were very cute. Whatever you do, don’t rent his first one, Free and Easy.
With his three-time costar, Jimmy Durante, Buster gets himself into a hilarious and improbable situation. It wouldn’t be a Buster Keaton movie if he didn’t accidentally get into trouble, then continually come up with incredibly smart ways to get out of it! And, it wouldn’t be a Buster Keaton movie if he didn’t fall in love. This time, he falls for Irene Purcell, who’s in love with the married Gilbert Roland. Irene and Gilbert have an on-again-off-again relationship, and when Irene decides she’s had enough, she employs Buster to be her pretend lover so Gilbert will stop pursuing her. When she changes her mind and wants to go back to Gilbert, Buster sticks to his contract and prevents her in every way he can think of. The endless obstacles are hilarious, incorporating slapstick with verbal humor, and taking advantage of the pre-Code moral standards. Once, Gilbert catches Buster wearing only a towel, hiding in Irene’s bathroom. In another scene, Buster’s wearing Irene’s pajamas and sets out a negligee on the bed for her to wear. “I live here!” he tells Gilbert, something he’d never be able to get away with two years later.
There are some cringe-worthy portions of this film that prevent it from being as perfect as Parlor, Bedroom and Bath. The beginning shows Buster as an amateur inventor, and as he tries to show a royal dignitary his new invention—a special type of gun—everyone thinks he’s trying to assassinate the prince. Also, the scenes with Mona Maris portray her as a hot-tempered, ridiculous Spaniard, a stereotype that isn’t funny in the modern era. However, as she throws vase after vase at Gilbert, then caresses him and says, “Can’t you see how much I love you?” she sets the scene for one of the most adorable endings to a 1930s movie I’ve ever seen. Ladies, get ready to throw something at the man you love.
