The People Against O'Hara (1951)
You probably know I think Spencer Tracy is overrated. I watched The People Against O’Hara with an open mind because I knew he played a lawyer, and I liked his performance of a judge in Cass Timberlake. However, this movie is representative of the Spencer Tracy I don’t like.
James Arness finds himself in a bad situation when a former friend gets murdered. His family is poor and can’t afford good representation, especially because policemen Pat O’Brien and John Hodiak are certain of his guilt. His parents prey on Spence’s sympathy, and he takes the case. However, his own demons surface as he works on the case, much to his daughter, Diana Lynn’s dismay. Spence is a recovering alcoholic, and Diana fears that his obsessive nature won’t drive him to drink again.
Besides the borderline-incestuous relationship between father and daughter, the courtroom portion of the film isn’t that interesting. Check out The Unknown Man for a better movie with similar themes.
