The Quiet Man (1952)
The Quiet Man is a very famous classic that’s worth a watch, if you like to watch famous, revered classics. John Ford won Best Director during the 1952 Oscar ceremony, and the cinematography was rewarded as well, since the movie was filmed entirely on location in Ireland. The beautiful green meadows in Technicolor are some of the most famous aspects of the film.
The other, much more famous part of the movie is the famous kiss scene between John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. You’ve probably seen it; the wind is blowing fiercely around them and Maureen slaps his face so hard she actually broke her wrist during the take. After such a feisty refusal, she tells him off in true Irish style, then kisses him back. It’s a very cute scene, one that’s often cited among the greatest of onscreen romances.
The rest of the movie centers on John and Maureen’s romance, her family’s objections, and the disapproval of an American in the small Irish village. There’s a pretty famous fistfight that comes from The Quiet Man, and John and Maureen continue to trade blows throughout the film, but it’s far from the typical western you’d normally find John Wayne in. It’s entertaining, but unless you’re in love with your Irish heritage, it probably won’t be your favorite.
