The Recruit (2003)
Colin Farrell stars as the titular character in The Recruit, a young man hopeful to join the CIA. This movie is fairly typical of its genre: the young, good-looking hero is fresh and trusting, and he finds a mentor who he may or may not be able to fully trust. The mentor is Al Pacino, so draw your own conclusions as to whether or not you think Colin should trust him.
The main problem I found with this movie was that Colin’s character wasn’t too bright. There’s a scene during the time he’s being trained for the CIA, and he and his love interest, Bridget Moynahan get kidnapped and tortured. Weakened by hormones, the desire to rescue the damsel, or plain stupidity, Colin tells his torturers what they want to know to spare Bridget further pain. Why wasn’t his immediate thought that the entire situation might have been a setup to test his loyalty? That was my first thought, and I was merely an audience member, not enduring difficult training to become a special agent! Since the main character repeatedly had either bad judgement or low intelligence, it was hard to root for him. But if you like the cast, go ahead and check it out to decide for yourself.
