The Red House (1947)
At first glance, his role in The Red House seems like a meaty part, so I understand why Edward G. Robinson would want to take it. He plays a hard-working farmer with a wooden leg who adopts a little girl when her parents abandon her, and the forest beyond their property is scary and dangerous. However, it really isn’t a good movie, so if you’re a big Eddie G fan like I am, you might want to skip it. It doesn’t do him justice, and without him in it, it would absolutely be a B-picture.
As a little girl, the family hums along well, but when she grows into a young woman, trouble brews. Allene Roberts loves her guardians Eddie and Judith Anderson very much, but she soon experiences a different kind of love. With romance comes the “Father of the Bride syndrome” where everything your boyfriend says is correct, even if it turns you against your parents. Lon McCallister is a sweet boy, but when he starts asking questions and exploring parts of their property, Eddie G takes a dislike to him. Will Allene discover something she shouldn’t? Check this out if you like B-thrillers, or if you ironically want to watch a movie with a color in its title filmed in black-and-white.
