The Road to El Dorado (2000)
The Road to El Dorado is one of those cartoons that won’t really be appreciated by the kiddies in the audience. If the kids are really young and haven’t even learned about the California goldrush yet, they won’t understand a thing. In the in-between age, which is when kids generally learn about El Dorado (and El Dorado County), they’ll probably get a few laughs out of it but will stick with their regular Disney favorites with the more hummable tunes. This is definitely geared towards the teens or parents who had to drive the younger folks to the theaters. After all, there’s no silly animal sidekick in this one.
The voices will be an added draw for the older folks; unfortunately, anyone under twelve doesn’t know who Kenneth Branagh and Kevin Kline are. If you have a very perceptive child with you, he or she might recognize the voice of Phoebus from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, but since Kevin’s character in The Road to El Dorado isn’t the blond, it’s unlikely. Those old enough to understand the quick banter of the two leads will get tons of laughs out of this cartoon. They’re troublemakers who try to lie and weasel their way out of every sticky situation, and sometimes the impeccable timing of the two talented actors might go over the kiddies’ heads.
Give this one a second chance if you saw it as a kid and didn’t like it. You’ll get more out of it the second time around, I guarantee it. And you’ll get to hear a few Elton John songs along the way! Kev-and-Ken only sing one duet, and it would have been fun to hear them sing more of the songs, but if you like Elton John, you won’t really mind.
