The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
The Rocky Horror Picture Show used to be extremely popular. Movie theaters used to play re-releases, audiences used to dress up and sing along, and some brave folks would even get up onstage and perform the musical numbers alongside the actors. However, with the recent cultural shift, the word “transvestite” isn’t acceptable anymore. If released today, one of the most popular songs from the movie would be considered highly offensive. Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s character would be considered transgender, and the entire story would be different – if it got financial backing at all. My guess is it would need a complete overhaul before any studio would touch it.
If you’re a brave soul, you won’t let semantics get in the way of your enjoyment of this cult classic. Susan Sarandon doesn’t get any cuter than singing “Touch-a-touch-a-touch-a-touch me. I want to be dirty!” in her white underwear. Barry Bostwick (before he became respectable and played George Washington) has plenty of underwear scenes as well, and the entire cast has great fun while leading the audience through the “Time Warp”. There are lots of classic moments and it’s full of raunchy humor – but then again, it’s not for everyone. It is pretty nasty, with lots of bed hopping and creepy characters. If you don’t like it, no one will hold it against you, especially since it’s not “in” anymore.
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to sexual content, I wouldn’t let my kids watch it.
