The Sea Hawk (1940)
Another Michael Curtiz-Errol Flynn-Erich Korngold swashbuckler? Yes please! The Sea Hawk is fantastic, so if you haven’t seen it yet, go out and rent it for your next movie night. If you liked Captain Blood, The Sea Hawk will probably be your new favorite film.
In this one, the tenth collaboration between the legendary director and adventurous leading man, Errol gets more time on a pirate ship. The prickly relations between Spain and England are explored by ambassador Claude Rains, but en route between the two nations, his ship is captured by pirate Errol Flynn! Errol has his own audience with Queen Elizabeth, played by Flora Robson, and she’s just as charmed by him as the audience. She soon employs him to capture some gold and arrange for peace between England and Spain. Not everyone trusts the former pirate, and he finds his mission isn’t as easy to accomplish as he hoped it would be.
This movie is such a prime example of the silver screen swashbuckling genre. With Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s exciting music (that sounds exactly like the themes he wrote for Captain Blood), and Michael Curtiz’s inventive directing, you’ll come back to this movie again and again whenever you need a pick-me-up. In an incredible fencing fight between Errol and Henry Daniell, Curtiz captures their movements illuminated by candlelight as shadows on the walls. It’s very intense, especially when the candles get knocked to the ground. The supporting cast will give you quite a treat, too. Errol’s faithful sidekick Alan Hale plays, well, his faithful sidekick, and Una O’Connor plays Brenda Marshall’s ladies’ maid. You’ll also catch Donald Crisp, William Lundigan, Halliwell Hobbes, Whit Bissell, and Gilbert Roland. Rent this one if you haven’t seen it yet. You’ll love it!
