The Sea Wolf (1941)
While I’ve heard The Sea Wolf compared to Mutiny on the Bounty, I liken it more to Lifeboat. Several strangers with different temperaments are thrown together on a ship, and human nature is exposed. I do understand the common analogy, though, since sea captain Edward G. Robinson plays yet another version of Captain Bligh. Many actors wanted to try their hand at Bligh in many “knock-off” films. If you want to see him in strictly a villainous role, you can try this one. I prefer him in his more likable characters.
I should probably give The Sea Wolf another chance, but as it stands, I don’t know why it is such a revered movie. In Edward G. Robinson’s brief tribute from Turner Classic Movies, one of the few movie clips included was from this seafaring drama. What am I missing? He’s gruff and cruel; I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s a one-dimensional performance, but he isn’t given much of anything to do besides scowl and be mean to John Garfield. Also aboard the ship are Ida Lupino and Alexander Knox. You’ll also see Gene Lockhart, Barry Fitzgerald, and Howard Da Silva.
