The Spanish Prisoner (1997)
This movie is so exciting and complex, I don’t really want to tell you anything about it. David Mamet’s dramatic thriller first takes the audience to the exotic setting of a tropical island as a group of businessmen take a corporate retreat. Campbell Scott stars as the inventor of something mysterious and very important, and as he’s tying up all the loose ends with his boss Ben Gazzara, he also flirts around with a new secretary, Rebecca Pidgeon. A chance encounter with Steve Martin leads to a favor, which leads to another favor, which leads to an entire movie of Campbell Scott making really stupid choices. But it’s so fun to watch him make them! Steve Martin asks his new pal to take a package home to the States for him and deliver it to his sister; Campbell agrees. What an idiot!
I had so much fun watching this movie, and you will too if you like thrillers. A slow start is necessary, but once it takes off, you’ll be kept on your toes for the rest of the movie. In classic ’90s cinema, there’s nothing gratuitous or graphic, so you don’t have to worry about being frightened, grossed out, or watching it with your kids. After you’ve watched it and liked it, pass on the recommendation to your friends—only don’t tell them what happens!
