The Spy Next Door (2010)
The Spy Next Door is one of my favorite Jackie Chan movies, from start to finish. The opening credits show a montage of Jackie’s action scenes from earlier in his career. We learn he’s been a secret agent, but now that middle-age has crept up on him, he’s happily retired to the suburbs. He lives next door to the beautiful Amber Valletta and her three kids, Madeline Carroll, Will Shadley, and Alina Foley. Jackie and Amber are dating, but her kids don’t like him. They think he’s a total geek, complete with glasses and a pen protector in his pocket. Isn’t that hilarious?
When Amber has a family emergency and needs to leave suddenly, Jackie volunteers to babysit her kids for the weekend. How hard can it be? Obviously, since this is a comedy, the quiet Halloween weekend turns out to be complicated, dangerous, and far different than anyone imagined. Complete with Russian spies, kidnappings, and super-impressive action scenes (no matter how old Jackie is), this movie is fun for the whole family. I missed it in the theaters, but ever since I rented it a few years ago, I’ve added it to my Halloween roster. Given the choice, I’ll always prefer to laugh rather than scream, and this charming comedy fits the bill perfectly. I just love Jackie Chan, and I really appreciated the rare opportunity for him to play a love interest as well!
DLM Warning: If you suffer from vertigo or dizzy spells, like my mom does, this movie might not be your friend. There are a few scene transitions that have some flashy, quick-cut, satellite-type footage, and that will make you sick. In other words, "Don't Look, Mom!"
