The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
“Nobody does it better. . .”
So sings Carly Simon in the iconic theme song to The Spy Who Loved Me, truly paying tribute to the great James Bond. It might not be the most rousing Bond song ever written, but it’s probably the most fitting. What’s the hallmark of every Bond movie? A Bond girl who winds up in bed with the seductive spy. So, if any (or all) of the girls wrote a little love letter to James Bond, it would be “Nobody Does It Better”.
This is probably my favorite of the old Bond movies (pre-Brosnan, by definition). It has tons of action, without the usual lag time of 1960s and 1970s films. The scenery is engrossing, as the bad guy’s headquarters are in an extensive submarine, and Roger Moore and Barbara Bach also go “sight-seeing” in Egypt. The fun henchman Jaws is introduced in this movie, and Curd Jurgens is memorable and engaging as the head villain. Roger Moore’s humorous, charming style is at its peak, and it’s just impossible to take your eyes away from the screen (unlike other oldies when popcorn breaks are plentiful).
Some prefer a more serious James Bond, but I love Roger Moore’s style. He uses puns and dry, English delivery, but I don’t think it detracts from the movie. Action movies are supposed to be fun, and letting the audience laugh occasionally allows them to have even more fun. Barbara Bach is a very lucky lady! And speaking of sex appeal, I love that even though he’s “past his prime”, Curd Jurgens brings every ounce of fantastic energy to the screen. There’s a scene where he has a late entrance, and he leaves his bedroom with such a satisfied look on his face, you can’t help but wonder what took up his time. He may have been sixty-two years old, but he still had the “it” factor.
