The Story of Temple Drake (1933)
The Story of Temple Drake boasts of what might be the nastiest promotional poster for an old movie I’ve ever seen. It’s no wonder Miriam Hopkins was one of the top sex symbols of the 1930s; but it is a wonder why her career took a nosedive so quickly. Why didn’t she continue to take lead after lead in the 1940s? Perhaps she was so depressed she didn’t play Scarlett O’Hara, she gave up.
If you agree that she should have played the famed Southern belle, you’ll want to see one of her raciest films in which she plays a spoiled, flirtatious Southern belle. She has a respectable lawyer in love with her, but she’s not satisfied and loves to tease other fellows as much as possible before saying “no”. Oh, and her father indulges her wild behavior. Temple Drake was basically her audition for Scarlett O’Hara!
The story itself is very dark, thanks to William Faulkner’s novel. Miriam gets into a car accident with her drunk date, and they get “rescued” by a mentally retarded young man, who leads them to a creepy shack with even creepier residents. An unrecognizable Florence Eldridge plays against type as a no-good tramp (meant in both definitions), and Jack La Rue is a bootlegger with a violent temper. After offering her safe shelter, Jack rapes Miriam and forces her to remain in his shack as his unwilling mistress.
In case this sounds a little familiar, you might have seen the remake Confession, starring Lee Remick and Yves Montand. That post-Code version takes liberties with the original story, so it is a little different. There’s still a Southern belle kidnapped by a serial rapist as the main plot, though. Lee Remick has more of a Stockholm Syndrome feeling for Yves Montand; Miriam Hopkins hates Jack La Rue from start to finish. And boy, is he creepy! I can’t in good faith recommend this movie because it’s pretty disturbing. If you love Miriam, you might want to rent it. Just know what you’re getting into.
