The Stratton Story (1949)
The beginning of this movie has an interesting meet-cute between James Stewart, who plays Monty Stratton, and Frank Morgan, the man who discovers him. Jimmy plays baseball for fun, when he’s not working on his family’s farm, and he runs five miles to and from his house. Frank scouts him but can’t keep up with his physical activities, and he has to strike quite a deal with Jimmy’s mother, Agnes Moorehead, before Jimmy agrees to go to a big baseball audition in the city.
The rest is history, and as he succeeds in his profession, he also falls in love with June Allyson. Then, an accident so tragic it wouldn’t be believed if this movie weren’t a true story occurs and Jimmy’s career comes to a screeching halt. I like James Stewart, but this movie is so stinky it’s hard to believe he’s one of our most beloved actors of the silver screen. If you don’t know the story, I won’t tell you about the accident, but Jimmy sometimes forgets he was supposed to have gone through it. There are a couple of scenes that made me cringe and ask the screen, “Did you forget you can’t do that anymore?” I also can’t stand June Allyson, so watching her as the beloved, devoted wife doesn’t work for me. As far as old baseball movies, I much prefer The Babe Ruth Story.
