The Swan (1956)
In The Swan, the beautiful Grace Kelly plays a princess in need of a prince. What a fitting last movie for Grace Kelly who met her real life Prince Charming just before filming the movie! This film was released the day before their wedding day so audiences could support the fairytale story (and bump up ticket sales for the star who would never make them another dollar).
Princess Grace's family isn't very wealthy, and they need to hook a rich prince to keep up their lifestyle. When a distant cousin, Alec Guinness, comes for an unexpected visit, Grace is recruited by her pushy mother, Jessie Royce Landis, to get him to propose. Normally, it wouldn’t seem to be a problem for someone to be interested in the beautiful Grace Kelly, but that’s where the twist comes in. Grace is positively awkward, and Alec isn’t interested. She can’t come up with any intriguing conversation, and he prefers to go to bed early and sleep in rather than spend time with her. Naturally Jessie is upset, and she continues to come up with tactics to throw them together.
Together with Leo G. Carroll as the devoted butler, Estelle Winwood as the aged grandmother, Brian Aherne as the well-meaning uncle who traded his royal duties for monks’ robes, and Louis Jourdan as the tutor with modern ideas, this is an enjoyable, light romp. The costumes and the set designs are very elegant and add to the fairytale setting. If you haven't seen this one yet, rent it.
