The Tall T (1957)
If you’re getting tired of seeing Randolph Scott in movies without any other known names in the supporting cast, rent either Hangman’s Knot or The Tall T to see some familiar faces. If you don’t care about anyone else’s mug but Scottie McScottie Pants, you can still rent this one because it’s very entertaining!
In this one, Scottie rides a stagecoach with newlyweds Maureen O’Sullivan and John Hubbard. A trio of bandits – Richard Boone, Henry Silva, and Skip Homeier – attack the coach and take Maureen hostage. Her father is very wealthy and they send John back to him with a message for ransom. Scottie stays with Maureen, and as everyone waits around for John to return, the stakes grow higher. What if John just takes off and doesn’t deliver the message? What if Maureen’s father doesn’t want to pay the ransom? What if she falls in love with Scottie while she’s waiting?
I had no idea Richard Boone usually played bad guys; all I’d ever seen him play was the therapist in the multiple personality drama Lizzie. The laugh’s on me: no wonder he always plays villains, since he’s so good at it! He reminded me of Alan Rickman in Die Hard. Ruthless, chilling, and with the carelessness that he kills people every day of the week. And yet, there’s a moment he’s given humanity and I found myself rooting for him to get the girl! His cohorts are also very bad and trigger-happy, so this movie is full of tension from start to finish.
