The Ten Commandments (1956)
The Ten Commandments is pretty much a love-it-or-hate-it movie. I know people who have listed it as their favorite movie of all time, and others who just can’t sit through it. When I finally got around to watching it, I had already been spoiled by watching Ben-Hur every Easter. With such a top-quality Biblical drama starring Charlton Heston setting the bar, it was tough to compete with. I thought the special effects were pretty silly. The screenplay was, at time, pretty corny. Casting certain actors who could never be believable in a period piece wasn’t the best choice. John Derek, Debra Paget, Yvonne De Carlo, Edward G. Robinson in Biblical times?
If you don’t like it, the four hour running time will start to torture you. If you do like it, it might be one of those yearly traditions you look forward to, the way my family looks forward to Ben-Hur. Even though I’m not really a fan, there are some parts I can appreciate, like the iconic parting of the Red Sea. There’s also a hug supporting cast, including Vincent Price, Martha Scott, Cedric Hardwicke, Judith Anderson, Nina Foch, John Carradine, and more. If I ever watch it again, though, it’ll strictly be for Yul Brynner. He’s extremely sexy in this movie; if you liked him strutting around bare-chested in The King and I, you’ll love him in this. Anne Baxter never had it so good!
