The Time Machine (1960)
There have been lots of movies made about H.G. Wells’s classic story, and those who grew up watching the latest versions might be disappointed by the 1960 original. If you can put on your 1960 goggles or appreciate cheesy sci-fi movies, definitely rent it. The production values were great for the time period, and a lot of work went into it.
In this version of the story, Rod Taylor stars as the author himself. He shows up late to a dinner party of his friends, Alan Young, Sebastian Cabot, Tom Helmore, and Whit Bissell. He’s disheveled and frantic, and he explains to them that he’s just been on a time trip using the machine he built in his basement. Naturally, they don’t believe him, but he proves it to them (and the audience) by telling them about his futuristic trip in detail. Of course, now the Elois, Morlocks, and Weena are all common phrases, but just try to imagine how fantastic it was to read about all this futuristic imagining in 1895! It was still entertaining and creepy in 1960, but before the turn of the century, it was practically genius. If you haven’t seen this one in a while, pop some corn and plan a fun matinee or dinner party – and you can tease your guests by arriving late to your own party!
