The Time Traveler's Wife (2010)
The Time Traveler’s Wife seems to be the ultimate chick flick, but if you take the time to analyze it, you might feel differently. Yes, it’s enormously romantic, that the idea of a man who time travels chooses one ordinary woman to repeatedly come back to throughout his life. It’s beyond adorable that she first meets him as a little girl, wishes to someday marry him, and fulfils her wish in her twenties. However, the 2009 film adaptation didn’t really develop anyone’s character or delve into the real meaningfulness of their relationship. Who is Rachel McAdams, besides a beautiful woman who sacrifices any security and permanency in her life for the brief moments when Eric Bana can show up? Why does Eric feel such a connection to her? What does she do with her life to make sure it has meaning in the interim between visits? Since the title clearly focuses on the wife, I would have thought some of those questions would be answered. I’m curious to pick up a copy of the book, because maybe the wife’s character does receive more attention and fleshing out.
But who am I to knock true love and romance? If you love stories like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button or Twilight, where a perfect fellow picks an average lady with whom to spend all eternity, you’ll love this one. It’s a total tearjerker, so if you’re showing it for a Valentine’s Day party, buy an extra box of Kleenex. Also, if you love this, check out the lesser known About Time also starring Rachel McAdams with a time-traveling hubby. It’s no wonder she got the part in that movie after she was so sweet and constant in this one.
DLM Warning: If you suffer from vertigo or dizzy spells, like my mom does, this movie might not be your friend. There are several abrupt camera rotations, and that will make you sick. In other words, "Don't Look, Mom!"
