The Unforgiven (1960)
Let’s get the obvious out of the way so that everyone who thinks it’s ridiculous can avoid The Unforgiven: Audrey Hepburn plays an American Indian. Sure, a John Huston western with Burt Lancaster, Audie Murphy, Charles Bickford, and Lillian Gish sounds tempting, but this movie is just awful. Audrey wisely turned down the lead in Sayonara because she knew it would be laughable to try and pass as a Japanese woman, but she should have turned this one down as well. She has absolutely no Indian features, and her slicked back wig is ridiculous.
It's also ridiculous that she’s been blithely going about her life with no inkling as to her true heritage, and when the cat gets let out of the bag, it destroys her and makes her act “wild”. There have been a lot of offensive westerns made back in the day, but The Unforgiven is one of the worst. Perhaps the title is meant to be a strange apology: it knows the story is so offensive it can never be forgiven. Even if you love Burt and Audrey, there’s really no reason to watch this movie. For a Burt western, you can rent The Kentuckian or Vera Cruz. Audrey just doesn’t belong in the Wild West. She’s far too elegant and full of composure, so thankfully this was the one and only time she tried to let her “hair” down and trot around on the prairie.
