The Valley of Decision (1945)
Fans of How Green was my Valley and Hungry Hill will love The Valley of Decision. It’s one of the great family feud movies of the silver screen, with all the elements of a classic that stands the test of time. A fantastic cast, great performances, a heartwrenching script, and a memorable setting. Just don’t worry about Gregory Peck not having an accent; he doesn’t do those and we all forgive him for it.
Greer Garson is the beautiful daughter of Lionel Barrymore, a man crippled by an accident at the steel mills owned by Donald Crisp. Because of that, Lionel has had a long-standing hatred for Don’s family for decades, instilling it in his children as well. But they’re poor, and Greer forgoes marriage for a while to get a job to help her family. But when she gets a job as a parlor maid working in the Crisp household, Lionel throws a fit! And when she meets Don’s oldest son, Gregory Peck, and starts to fall in love with him, Lionel gives her the angriest, bitterest curse I’ve ever heard in the movies. “If you have any children, may they be born dead,” he snarls as he throws Greer out of the house with nothing but her tears.
You might not have ever heard of this melodrama, but once you see it, you’ll never forget it. This movie made me a fan of Greer Garson, as she shows through every spoken line and every bit of body language that she’s an accomplished and trained actress. Lionel Barrymore is wonderful, breaking your heart when he cries – but Greer is the true star of the show. She’s just wonderful – and she’s so pretty, too! She and Greg make a lovely looking couple together. You’ll also see Dan Duryea, Gladys Cooper, Preston Foster, and Jessica Tandy in the supporting cast.
