The War Wagon (1967)
When you hear the upbeat title song play during the credits, you’ll think you’re in for the silliest ’60s western ever, but hang in there. Yes, you’ll see a ridiculous performance by Howard Keel (who reportedly only took the role because he needed the money) as he tries to convince audiences he’s an Indian. But most of the movie is entertaining, and a fine western – after all, how bad can a movie with John Wayne and Kirk Douglas be? Not bad at all.
John tries to recruit his old pal Kirk to steal a gold shipment, but Kirk tells him to keep both his eyes open. John has a price on his head, and at any time, Kirk could kill him and collect the bounty. With Robert Walker Jr. and Keenan Wynn along to supply their own special talents, like explosives and getaway wagons, the gang has to pull together to capture the gold. Will old rivalries and personality clashes get in the way, or will they all end up rich? This movie has it all: tons of masculinity, exciting action sequences, humor, friendship, fistfights, and fun characters to get to know and root for. Kirk looks particularly scrumptious in his black cowboy costume; if you think he’s as cute as I do, check this movie (and him) out!
