The Wild One (1953)
Ah, The Wild One: the movie with Marlon Brando on a motorcycle. Usually, I love Stanley Kramer’s movies, but this is an exception. The subgenre of teenage punks has never appealed to me. I look at the rebels without a cause as spoiled, privileged brats who need severe discipline. If you don’t, you’ll probably like this light flick.
The plot is very thin: two motorcycle gangs have macho-attitude contests when they stop off at a small Americana town. With all the gum-chewing, sunglasses-wearing, hip-bumping prowess of Marlon Brando and Lee Marvin, it’s nearly impossible not to laugh. These too-cool-for-school kids wearing leather jackets and tilting their heads back as they look down on all the “Daddy-Os” are far more comical than they are menacing. But the head policeman in town, Robert Keith, doesn’t like the bad element – especially when his daughter, Mary Murphy, becomes attracted to Marlon.
If you can make it past the obvious blue screen in the first five minutes, with Marlon merely rocking back and forth on a stationary motorcycle, you stand a chance at making it through the rest of the movie. It’s very silly, and it’s hard to believe Marlon kept his sex symbol status after making this one.
