The Woman in the Window (1944)
When the cat’s away, the mice will play...
I can’t recommend The Woman in the Window highly enough. It’s one of my all-time favorite noirs. There’s no reason for Double Indemnity and Shadow of a Doubt to be so famous and well-known throughout the generations, when this thriller is even better and stands the test of time just as well.
Edward G. Robinson is a respectable professor and family man. He lives an orderly life and has never gotten into trouble. He has a group of gentlemen friends at the club, and they often talk philosophy before heading home to their wives. When Eddie G’s wife takes the kids away for the week to visit her mother, his entire life changes. He admires the stunning portrait of a woman in the window of an art gallery. As he gazes at the portrait, the model herself appears beside him!
This thriller will keep you on your toes from start to finish. Costarring Joan Bennett as the titular character, Dan Duryea, and Raymond Massey, it’s one of the greatest noirs of the silver screen. I won’t tell you anything else, because it defies description when it all unfolds before you.
