The Woman on the Beach (1947)
I don’t know why Hollywood typecast Robert Ryan as a villain. He made plenty of movies where he was the hero, and when he did, he was very likable. In The Woman on the Beach, he plays a returning veteran with PTSD. He has demons to fight, and perhaps that’s why he feels drawn to a woman with secrets and demons of her own: Joan Bennett. In her femme fatale phase, Joan is a mysterious, seductive woman who lives on an alluring beach house with her invalid husband, Charles Bickford. Charles is a talented painter who is now blind, but will he be able to sense his wife having an affair right under his nose?
If you like mysterious noirs, this will be a great choice for a rainy Saturday night. It’s dark, exciting, and has a different setting than most noirs. The ocean, with its vast waves and storms, is a great environment for a turbulent man to get in over his head. It’s a great Dana Andrews and Linda Darnell vehicle, but Robert and Joan hold their own very well. Check it out!
