The World is Not Enough (1999)
In The World Is Not Enough, James Bond has to protect an heiress whose father has just been assassinated by a massive bad guy with his eye on world destruction via oil pipelines. Sounds spooky, doesn’t it? This one is pretty creepy, but it is wildly entertaining, just like all the Pierce Brosnan Bond movies. Robert Carlyle is the bad guy (yes, that’s really him under the skull cap), and his nerve endings are failing him. Do you think he might cut his hand with broken glass to creep out the audience? Do you think Sophie Marceau (the heiress) might have some creepy trauma connected with her past? There’s also a pretty scary scene where Denise Richards is trapped as water gushes in, but it might not frighten anyone unless they’re afraid of water, like I am.
So while The World Is Not Enough is a little scary, there are also fun parts. Like the “Pierce Brosnan jacket” that turns into a puffy, indestructible igloo that can survive an avalanche. And the character name of Denise Richards: Dr. Christmas, setting up a ridiculous pun at the end of the movie. My all-time favorite is GoldenEye, but my brother’s favorite is The World Is Not Enough. He was totally in love with Denise Richards when he was a teenager, so I think we went to the theaters more than once in 1999. For those who like their Bond movies on the darker side, rent this one for a great ’90s flashback.
