There's No Business Like Show Business (1954)
To make it up to Ethel Merman for not using her in the film adaptation of Annie Get Your Gun, Hollywood took her immortal song from the show and named a new musical film after it. Who wouldn’t flock to the theaters to see Ethel sing “There’s No Business Like Show Business”? Just in case that wasn’t as big enough of a draw—and it totally was—Hollywood threw in Donald O’Connor, who worked delightfully with Ethel in Call Me Madam, and Marilyn Monroe.
Marilyn isn’t given anything to do but prance around practically naked and sing to the camera—which some would argue is her best talent anyway. But if you like seeing her doing anything else besides that, like enjoying comedic banter, showing a dramatic, vulnerable side, or performing in actual clothing, you probably won’t care about this movie. I can only imagine how disappointed she was to be cast in this watered-down part.
This really isn’t my favorite 1950s musical, even though I’m a fan of the three leads. I’ve seen it once and wouldn’t care to see it again. I’d rather spend my time watching Call Me Madam and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.
