Thirteen Women (1932)
There were lots of horror movies made in the 1930s. Most of them are pretty silly when you watch them today, but there are a lot of people who enjoy watching cheesy old flicks. If you do, check out the forgotten drama, Thirteen Women. In it, each of the thirteen women receive a mysterious letter from a psychic informing them that they are going to either commit suicide or be responsible for someone else’s death. It’s been written in the stars, so naturally, none of the woman can fight it off. At least, that’s the premise. Irene Dunne gets first billing, so she might try to beat the inevitable.
There’s a joke in my household called “Poor Helen”. My sister-in-law has a hard time distinguishing different actors when they resemble each other, so when we see two people in a movie that look alike, we tease that she’ll have a hard time following the story. There are several women in the cast of Thirteen Women with the same haircut, coloring, and facial structure. Even I, who knew the different actresses, had a hard time telling them apart. Poor Helen!
If you like this genre, you’ll probably have a good time with it. Myrna Loy plays the evil psychic, and her makeup to make her look like a “half breed” (the film’s word, not mine) is quite amusing.
