Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967)
The opening notes of Elmer Bernstein’s catchy “Thoroughly Modern Millie” will have you tapping your toe. It’s 1922, it’s Julie Andrews, and she gets to sing cute songs while dressed in gorgeous outfits. How appealing is that? Very, which is why every fan has seen this 1960s musical at least once. It doesn’t hold a candle to The Sound of Music, but sometimes it’s just hard to resist.
If the whole movie were just Julie Andrews singing and dancing the Charleston while her too-large-for-the-twenties bust gets in the way of her string of pearls, it would be delightful. But the plot is a little fluffy, Carol Channing is ridiculous, and “Oriental kidnapping” isn’t politically correct. Jack Soo, Pat Morita, and Philip Ahn must have needed their paychecks. I love looking at the costumes, though. If it’s been a few years since you’ve seen it, make it a weekend matinee. Don’t expect too much, and you’ll be very entertained.
