Three Comrades (1938)
In Three Comrades, Margaret Sullavan has to choose between three men: Robert Taylor, Robert Young, and Franchot Tone. It’s a little bit uneven, trying to blend romance, drama, revolutionaries, and friendship into one screenplay. I’m sure it could have been done, and I hate to criticize F. Scott Fitzgerald’s work, but maybe because his vision was merged with Edward Paramore Jr. and Joe Mankiewicz’s, the end result was muddled.
I’m not spoiling anything by saying that the love triangle is pretty nonexistent. Each of the three male leads do develop feelings for Margaret, but since one of them is a radical revolutionary and another is clearly old and haggard, she’s left with only one option. And let me tell you, if you don’t like the direction the story takes in the beginning, you’re not going to like the rest of the movie. I don’t find Margaret a very likable heroinne, or a very good actress, so even though she was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in this film, I was left wondering why.
