'Til We Meet Again (1940)
Two actors who made big tearjerkers the year before, Merle Oberon and George Brent, teamed up in 1940 with a remake of one of the saddest old movies ever. The original was the perfectly titled One Way Passage, but the remake changed its name to ’Til We Meet Again. Merle and George meet on a cruise ship, but neither one is taking the trip for fun or romance. George is a prisoner on his way to death row, and Merle is dying.
You will definitely need your Kleenexes for this movie. Both versions are very good, so I would just recommend whichever cast appeals to you more. It’s an incredibly tragic story that you can either find depressing or beautiful, and it’s a real gem for old movie fans. Even though it has a dated setting (no cell phones, no internet, and everyone is stuck in the middle of the ocean), it’s immersive and is still relatable to modern audiences. What’s more compelling than a doomed romance with two people who know from the get-go they can never be together? In the supporting cast, you’ll see Pat O’Brien as the arresting officer with a heart of gold and Geraldine Fitzgerald as Merle’s traveling companion. And in a cute casting choice, Frank McHugh plays the same role he did eight years earlier. Open that Kleenex box and invite your girlfriends over.
