To Catch a Thief (1955)
If it wasn’t for the title, I don’t know if anyone would know what To Catch a Thief is about. Audience members were mesmerized by the beauty of Grace Kelly, Cary Grant, Edith Head’s costumes, and the sparkly costume jewelry. With all that occupying their brains, who had room to remember a plot?
I’m not Grace Kelly’s biggest fan, but even I can admit that she looks very pretty in this movie. A three-time Hitchcock girl, she personifies icy blonde onscreen—even though that was far from her persona offscreen. She’s a secret agent and tries to catch the elusive jewel thief Cary Grant, so she tries to bait him and set him up for an easy trap. But, since this is a Hitchcock movie, the plot doesn’t stop there.
In addition to the famous picnic scene, during which Cary Grant refuses to pick his preference between legs and breasts, there are several equally provocative romantic scenes scattered throughout the movie. “Even in this light, I can tell where your eyes are looking,” Grace says before leaning forward and forcing Cary to cup her diamond necklace—while she’s still wearing it. If you’re looking for a steamy old movie with an abundance of eye candy, this is it.
