To Kill a Mockingbird
by Harper Lee
What pressure, to review such a classic. Not only is To Kill a Mockingbird one of America’s greatest classics, but my brother was named after the main character! Well, to be honest, he was named after Gregory Peck’s portrayal of Atticus Finch in the movie, but I know my mom liked the book, too.
The narrator is a young girl, Scout (oh that’s where you’ve heard that name!), who watches as her father—the man who invented integrity—Atticus Finch defends a black man in court. Finch’s client is a lost cause, simply because of the color of his skin. In 1930s Alabama, the man’s fate has already been decided. Still, Atticus Finch believes every man deserves the right to a fair trial, and even when the town turns against him and his family, he stands by his client.
If by some miracle you haven’t read this book or seen the movie, pick one and get to it! It’s a classic for a reason, and not just the usual “life is terrible insta-classic” reason. To Kill a Mockingbird is actually a good book. Just ask my mom.
