Tom Jones (1963)
Tom Jones was the highlight of 1963, sweeping up four Oscars including Best Picture. It led to countless movies copying the tongue-in-cheek style of some youth’s bawdy adventures in the 1700s. I’ve given it two chances, but I just didn’t like it and couldn’t figure out why it was so popular at the time. Yes, Albert Finney was a cutie pie, but the story was ridiculous and the acting style got on my nerves very quickly. I’ve never been one to appreciate over-the-top sexual behavior in a time period when such actions would be out of place – never mind that it’s supposed to be silly – so I just couldn’t get into the movie. What’s so erotic about devouring chicken legs, for goodness’ sake?
The one part of the film I did appreciate was John Addison’s music. Completely original and completely fitting into the time period, it was cute, lively, and easily stole the show. Albert Finney’s charming grin and fluffy hair rocketed him to stardom, so if you only think of him as Ed from Erin Brockovich, you might need to rent this movie and sit through it for at least thirty minutes just to see what he used to look like. If you end up liking it, there are many others you can add to your list: The Amorous Adventures of Moll Flanders, Eliza Fraser, and Barry Lyndon, to name a few.
