Tower Heist (2011)
Heist movies are always fun, in my opinion, especially if they’re comedies. What’s funnier than watching the perfect crime being bungled by buffoons? Tower Heist isn’t side-splittingly funny, but there are a few laughs in there, and there’s definitely an investment in hoping the “good guys” get away with it.
The premise is different than your average bank robbery flick. In this one, millionaire Alan Alda embezzles and squanders the life savings and pensions of the workers in his apartment building. The manager, Ben Stiller, knows that Alan has a stash of $20 million hidden in the penthouse for emergencies, and because he feels so bad for his staff, he believes retribution is in order. He bails out a hardened criminal from jail (Eddie Murphy) to help plan the robbery. But since no one knows what they’re doing, a lot goes wrong.
This one has some dark moments to it, which is why it isn’t the funniest comedy out there. Since this situation has happened to people in real life, your heart really goes out to those who lost all their money. Also, since almost everyone in the cast is approaching middle age (yes, that is gray in Ben Stiller’s hair), you really get the sense that they were counting on that money for retirement after working for decades. In the supporting cast, you’ll see Matthew Broderick, Tea Leoni, Michael Pena, Casey Affleck, Gabourey Sidibe, and Judd Hirsch.
